Marayoor, Munnar


Marayoor is located at a distance of about 40 kilometers from Munnar. Lying on the eastern side of the Western Ghats, this is the only place in Kerala where a natural growth of sandalwood can be found. This place is also famous for its prehistoric sites, solid sugar molasses and the gentle waters of the Paramba river flowing close by.

Wrapped in a wispy blanket of glorious clouds, Marayoor is an enchanting landscape of exquisite green beauty. Blessed with a sea of fragrant sandalwood trees, this place is a sensory experience like none other.



What adds another dimension to the experience of this location is the presence of the old Muniyaras, which are burial chambers belonging to the megalithic age. Simple in their construction, these cists are made of granite slabs stacked against each other. The view of this ancient creation against the backdrop of the valley is a sight to behold, and is a must visit for nature lovers and history buffs alike.

Ezhuthupara
Located near Marayoor are the ancient cave paintings of Ezhuthupara, which are a relic unique to this particular location only. These pictures are found in the forest area of Marayoor and are a protected monument by the State Archaeological Department.

The paintings found here are two varieties- one kind is made of reddish brown soil rich in iron minerals and the other made of white clay soil. The sight of these paintings is an insightful look into the rich cultural heritage of our country.


Sandalwood Forest
Perhaps the most relevant reason for Marayoor's fame is its rich sandalwood forest. Housing about 65,000 trees, this is the only place in the state where these prized trees are found naturally. The sandalwood of this region is very high in its quality and has a huge demand in the market. What's more, the picturesque symmetry of the tree plantations makes Marayoor a delightful and quaint picnic spot.

Regular buses are available to Marayoor from all the major sites in Munnar. You can also hire a taxi to reach this place.
